Watch With Your Kids: Hayao Miyazaki movies {things to do}

20 Jun

kids movie recommendationsAs I explained in a previous post, the typical Disney movie doesn’t work in our house. The part when someone dies always causes great distress. So, in an attempt to try something new, we’ve watched a few Hayao Miyazaki movies. Hayao Miyazaki is a celebrated Japanese animation director who has been called the Walt Disney of Japan. According to my kindergarten-age child, the movies are not as “scary.” The movies are actually quite beautiful, with magical plots that kids and adults can enjoy. So far, my child has seen Kiki’s Delivery Service, Ponyo, and The Secret Life of Arrietty. All three are available on DVD, and the most recent release, The Secret Life of Arrietty, is currently a movie on demand on Verizon Fios. I would recommend Ponyo for ages 4 and up, and Kiki’s Delivery Service and The Secret Life of Arrietty for ages 6 and up.
